Year 1 - Deciphering an unknown word.

We discovered a new big book on the Infant Explorer site today "Sebastian's Waddle". The children were already familiar with the website and were excited about reading the new book during our shared reading time. We discussed the picture on the front of the book, the title and the author of the book. We read through the text together and discussed what Sebastian might have found at each point of his journey. Children took it in turns to click on the arrows and question marks to explore the book. They enjoyed watching the animated pictures and listening to the sounds.

During our word level work we looked at an enlarged section of the text which had post-it notes covering certain words. By reading through, leaving a gap and re-reading the children were able to suggest possible words. They took it in turns to come and write these on the board. We also thought of some silly alternatives to make nonsense sentences!

We used an activity sheet downloaded from the website during our independent work time. It was related to the previous activity and involved the children cutting and sticking missing words back into a sentence from the book. For extra support with this activity children were encouraged to look again at the story on the computer.

Children read out these sentences to the class during the plenary session.
