Guess Who?
This is what my nest looks like.

I've black feathery wings,
But walk on the ground,
I eat berries and fruit,
And move with no sound!

cassowary

I'm a bird!
My real name is a Cassowary. I eat juicy fruits that grow on rainforest trees. My throat is so big I can eat fruits whole! The seeds come out in my droppings.

Sadly I am
an endangered animal.

Cassowaries can grow up to 2 metres tall. That is taller than most humans!

droppings

The droppings of a Cassowary are full of fruit seeds. These seeds have to travel through a Cassowaries stomach, before they can grow into new trees!Back

endangeredCassowary
An animal is endangered when there are not many of its type left. An animal will be extinct when there are none of its type left.

Cassowaries are important for the growth of rainforests because of the way they help tree seeds to grow. If the Cassowary became extinct, some new rainforest trees would not be able to grow.

Back

Cassowaries have become endangered because people cut down rainforest to build houses or turn into farmland.

Many Cassowaries are also
killed each year by cars.
