of water insect. The young nymphs build a home out of small stones, twigs,
leaves and sand. This makes them camouflaged against their background.
After a few months they go inside their home and pupate, just like a caterpillar.

Great water boatmen are
large water insects. They are meat-eaters (known as carnivores) which
eat other insects. Their backs are silver to camouflage them against the
sky. This hides them from animals looking up at them from under the water.
Great water boatmen can also fly to get from pond to pond.

Newts are a type of amphibian
like frogs. They spend part of their life in water and part of their life
on land. Newts lay their eggs one by one in water and stick them to water
plants. They may lay hundreds like this! The eggs hatch after a few weeks
and the newtpoles (like tadpoles) have gills to breathe in the water. |

Fish live in water and
use their gills to breathe. Their bodies are covered in slippery scales.
Fish use their fins to help them to move through the water. There are
more than 20,000 different types of fish.

Herons are a type of bird
which like living near water. They have long necks, legs and bills or
beaks. They use their bills to spear their prey in shallow water. Herons
make their nests high up in trees to lay their eggs. |
