It was a caddis fly nymph. They build their homes out of twigs and stones.

caddis fly nymph

Caddis flies are a type of water insect. The young nymphs build a home out of small stones, twigs, leaves and sand. This makes them appear camouflaged against their background. After a few months they go inside their home and pupate, just like a caterpillar. The adult caddis fly comes out as a insect which can fly.
